Linguist, professor, member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences

Haldur Õim is a graduate of Tõrva secondary school and University of Tartu.

 

He defended his Candidate of Sciences dissertation at the University of Tartu in 1970 on the topic of person-related word groups and his PhD dissertation in 1992 on the semantics of directive communication. 

Since 1969 he has been working at the University of Tartu, at first as senior researcher and later as lecturer. He is a professor since 1986 and the first professor of general linguistics at the University of Tartu since 1992. Haldur Õim is now professor emeritus and senior researcher at the University of Tartu.

Haldur Õim’s research can be provisionally divided into two:

  •  study of meaning: semantics and pragmatics, at first in the more formalist paradigm, later turning towards cognitive approach
  •  computer linguistics: modeling of dialogue, applications of frame semantics etc.

 

Haldur Õim can be considered the founder of the research groups of computer linguistics and cognitive linguistics at the University of Tartu.

Haldur Õim was elected a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences in 1994, he has received the Order of the White Star Class IV in 2001 and the Ferdinand Johann Wiedemann Language Award in 2005.
